Edmonton cracks list of cities with worst traffic in Canada

The GPS company TomTom has released their roundup of the world’s most congested cities last year, and Edmonton cracked Canada’s traffic top 10. Even with congestion levels down across the board, Edmonton still has a little traffic left in it. Here’s a quick rundown.

Basically, TomTom looked at how long trips took every month, then compared that with ‘no traffic’ times. And, it turns out that Edmonton sat at around 13% last year. That’s down from 2019 (at 16%), but actually, Edmonton came out as the most stable city for traffic year over year.

In contrast, here’s the rest of the top 10:

  1. Vancouver- 30%
  2. Toronto- 22%
  3. Montreal- 20%
  4. Ottawa- 19%
  5. London- 18%
  6. Halifax- 17%
  7. Winnipeg- 17%
  8. Quebec City- 14%
  9. Edmonton- 13%
  10. Calgary- 13%

What’s more, Vancouver was the only city in Canada to crack the top 100 for congestion worldwide, at number 56. Still, we’re a long ways off from some of the world’s worst cities for traffic. You’d think that Mumbai would come out on top, but it turns out Moscow takes the crown this year, with 54% congestion.

Now, the real question is what will 2021 look like? Are people going to start taking public transit once more? Will everyone with a private vehicle be driving it? We have no idea! Guess we’re going to have to wait and see.
