This provincial park is a “secret gem” with a breathtaking view of an Alberta river valley

For those who love the outdoors, there’s no place quite like Wild Rose Country.

From Banff and Jasper to Waterton and Kananaskis, those looking to breathe in some fresh air are spoiled for choice – but what if you want to go somewhere quiet?

Described as a “little-known secret gem,” Dry Island Buffalo Jump is a beautiful provincial park located near Trochu, Alberta about an hour from Red Deer.

Offering breathtaking views of a river valley the area has two campgrounds, an interpretive viewpoint of the jump, walking trails and over 150 different species of birds.

From warblers and golden eagles to turkey vultures and praise falcons, the area is alive and in the warmer months, makes a great place for a picnic, a hike, or to roast some marshmallows.

In addition, there’s a hand boat launch making it easier than pie for those who want to explore the badlands from the water or go fishing.

Whether it be the coulees, unique plants, the native grasslands or the wildlife you’re in for a treat – however there are a few things of note before you visit the Day Use Area.

The most important? Check the Alberta Parks website ahead of your trip!

Because the road to the main gate is only passable when dry due to slippery and dangerous road conditions when it’s wet, however, vehicles can still access the viewpoint, which is located inside the park boundary along the park entrance road.

During the operating season (May 1st and October 30th), guests can enter between 7 am and 11 pm – so plan accordingly.

It really is a beautiful place, Alberta, so check it out!
