If you’re thinking of heading to Victoria or Southern Vancouver Island before summer’s end, it’s worth adding Colwood, British Columbia to your itinerary. The small seaside city is situated along more than 5 kilometres of scenic oceanfront, with some incredible local history to take in. This includes Cole Island, a National Historic Site you can paddle to with 19th-century buildings!
The heritage buildings date back to 1859, when the first buildings used to store gunpowder were constructed. Today, five of the original structures remain, allowing visitors to step back in time and explore a piece of BC’s history that’s often overlooked.
Located in Esquimalt Harbour just off Colwood’s shore, the island is accessible by a quick boat ride, kayaking, paddling, or even swimming. So get ready for a water adventure and a self-guided tour all rolled into one!

Cole Island has been a popular spot for kayakers, family picnics, and community events, according to the City of Colwood. Historically, the small island has significant ties to the Royal Navy as an ammunition depot.
In June 2006, the site was officially recognized as a Canadian National Historic Site.
According to the City of Colwood, the National Historic District it was designated to is now considered to be “the most complete site of Royal Navy activity and infrastructure in the Commonwealth.”
So there you have it, explorers! Enjoy your trip back in time.
