This scenic BC city in the middle of two rivers has a historic suspension bridge

Who’s ready to explore a scenic waterfront destination this summer? Situated in the middle of two major rivers (Kootenay and Columbia), the small city of Castlegar, BC has no shortage of swimming and paddling opportunities to enjoy as the weather heats up.

With three major lakes and numerous smaller ones within arm’s reach, you’re all but guaranteed a relaxing day on the water in Castlegar. Rent a canoe or stand-up paddleboard, race down the whitewater rapids, or take a dip in the nearby Arrow Lakes, Slocan, or Kootenay Lake.

For those looking for something more thrilling, the Slocan River has class III rapids, and there are ‘standing waves’ near the historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge.

Constructed in 1913 by community labour, the bridge marks an achievement by the Doukhobors of Canada in establishing settlements in the Kootenay Boundary region during the early 20th century.

For fifty years, the bridge connected Doukhobor settlements on both sides of the Kootenay River, serving as a vital transportation link, according to Parks Canada.

Today, it serves as a National Historic Site and part of the famed Trans Canada Trail, offering visitors a look at the community’s history.

Another draw of the town is the 23-hectare Millennium Park, which is situated on the shores of the Columbia River near the downtown core. Known as the ‘largest bike park in the Kootenays,’ the park is a popular spot for visitors and residents alike to enjoy swimming, biking, and picnicking.

So there you have it, BC. Both art and nature enthusiasts have plenty to explore in Castlegar!
