While it might not be an official holiday here in Canada, that hasn’t stopped Vancovuerites from getting together every year in honour of Cinco de Mayo. What better way to celebrate than with a cerveza (beer) in hand, and a ton of delicious food in your belly??

In case you didn’t know, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day (that’s in September). This holiday celebrates the Mexican defeat of the French army in 1862.

Now that we’ve got that cleared up, let’s dive into our roundup of Cinco de Mayo festivities going on this year.

Although it’s not food-related or technically on Cinco de Mayo, there’s a Mexican-American (Xicanx) art exhibition coming to MOA at UBC on Thursday, May 12th that may expand your knowledge of the holiday.

The artists are of Xicanx heritage and delve into the multi-generational experience of their identity in their ‘Dreamers & Changemakers’ exhibit. Come learn about the ancestral homeland of Aztlán, the Chicano civil rights movement in the U.S., and more.
