Imagine experiencing the joys and wonders of a European-inspired Christmas festival without having to travel! Well, you can, right here in Ontario. The annual Christkindl Market returns to Kitchener next month for four days. Here’s what to know.

Watch as the streets transform into a traditional festival inspired by the Christmas festivals found in Germany. The annual holiday market will take over downtown Kitchener from Dec. 4 to 7, 2025.

According to the City of Kitchener, the Christkindl Market will fill the streets of Kitchener with exciting holiday activities, delicious eats, fun shopping experiences, and more.

It’s a traditional Christmas festival that dates back 700 years, modelled after those found in Germany.

“For over 600 years German communities have continued the tradition of creating Christmas markets in the central square of their cities and towns – building tiny wooden huts where cooks, artisans and merchants could peddle their wares, and providing a place where people could meet to share songs, food and gifts,” shared the City of Kitchener.

“We’ve continued that tradition, bringing together more than 80 vendors of local artisan handicrafts, decorations, jewellery, food and more.”

How Christkindl Market started in Kitchener

Christkindl Market was brought to Kitchener’s City Hall by founder Tony Bergmeier, a beloved figure in the city who made significant contributions to the German-Canadian community. “It was designed to breathe life into the core of downtown Kitchener,” they added.

Over 35,000 visitors from across North America visit the award-winning festival annually.

This is your opportunity to shop for all kinds of gifts, crafts, and knick-knacks this holiday season.

Feeling hungry? You can chow down on a soft pretzel, sip on mulled wine and watch performances and exciting demonstrations throughout the festivities.

“Christmas tree, or Tannenbaum is one of the most popular traditions associated with the Christmas festivity,” shares the city. “It is often a spruce or fir tree that is decorated with hundreds of lights during the days before Christmas.”

Make your way to Carl Zehr Square and on Gaukel Street near Charles Street, to see these Christmas trees in all their glory.
