Your pockets may feel a little heavier this month thanks to the first pollution pricing rebate of the year. The Canadian government will be issuing Climate Action Incentive payments to eligible Canadians this month

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, those “living in provinces where the federal fuel charge applies will receive their first pollution pricing rebate” for 2024 on January 15th.

This will be in the form of a cheque or by direct deposit, whichever you have set up.

“The direct proceeds from the federal pollution price are returned to the jurisdiction from which they were collected to help with cost-of-living challenges while keeping the incentive to pollute less,” states the ECCC.

Qualifying provinces for the Canadian Action Incentive include Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI.

The Climate Action Incentive payment for single Canadians are expected as follows:

  • $193 in Alberta
  • $132in Manitoba
  • $92 in New Brunswick
  • $164 in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • $124 in Nova Scotia
  • $122 in Ontario
  • $120 in Prince Edward Island
  • $170 in Saskatchewan

“Eight out of 10 households receive more money back through the pollution price rebate than they pay as a result of the federal pollution pricing system, with low- and middle-income households benefitting the most,” states the ECCC.

“Residents of small and rural communities receive an extra 10 percent supplement beyond the base rebate amount. As of April 2024, the Government will double the rural supplement to 20 percent, in recognition of the increased energy needs of rural residents and their reduced access to cleaner transportation options.”

This is just one of the many benefits coming to Canadians throughout the year.
