City of Calgary to replace Canada Day fireworks with new pyrotechnic show

Summer is hot on our heels and with it, July 1st festivities. This year, however, the big Canada Day Celebration in Calgary will be a little different than in the past.

As announced today, the city will pilot an enhanced pyrotechnic show, featuring a “stunning display of lights and sounds” at Fort Calgary.

“This year we’re testing out a new way of closing out Canada Day festivities that addresses some of the cultural, community and environmental impacts previously experienced with traditional Canada Day fireworks,” said Franca Gualtieri, Manager of Arts & Culture at The City of Calgary.

“Over the next year, we’ll engage with citizens, community groups and cultural groups to collect feedback to understand Calgarians’ preferences for Canada Day programming which will help guide future decisions around Canada Day fireworks.”

According to the city, this is being done in response to the cultural, community and environmental effects previously experienced with traditional Canada Day fireworks and in turn, will also help mitigate disruptive late-night traffic, noise and overcrowding issues around popular viewing sites across Calgary.

As of right now, the city has yet to release further information about this summer’s programming, but we’ll update you as details come to light.

Until then, let us know what you think! Change can be a good thing and it’ll be interesting to see what they have up their sleeves.

No doubt, it’s going to be an interesting one!
