This Ontario city is a popular filming destination for multiple Netflix projects

Toronto isn’t the only place in the province where movies and TV shows are filmed! Cambridge, Ontario is a popular backdrop to films and series on one of the most beloved streaming platforms: Netflix.

The city is in the Waterloo region, an area you may not have suspected as a filming location but we’re here to assure you that you’ve likely seen it on your TV screen a time of two.

Getting there

According to the city’s website, “The City of Cambridge is a thriving, cosmopolitan located in southwestern Ontario”.

Cambridge is nestled in the Waterloo region and if you’re driving in from Toronto it will take you around an hour and a half.

Filming in Cambridge, Ontario

Now for the fun stuff! It’s no surprise the city is used as a filming backdrop as the area is known for its “old-world” feel and “Dickensian” look thanks to its 19th-century limestone buildings.

Two of the most popular Netflix projects filmed in Cambridge may have come across your TV screen before: “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Queen’s Gambit”.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” is set in a dystopian future with many areas of the community being used in this series. According to the City of Cambridge, “While everyone knows what those red capes mean now, the first year the program filmed in Cambridge staff received reports of satanic rituals occurring by the river!”

“The Queen’s Gambit” primarily used the historic Galt neighbourhood to film.

The area stood in for Lexington, Kentucky, where the main character Beth Harmon lived.

Shooting in this neighbourhood took place over six days and if locals look closely there are recognizable spots that can be pointed out such as 15 Brant Road S.

Other projects that have been filmed in Cambridge include:
