Fall is finally here, and if you’re looking to really soak up those cozy, autumnal vibes, this destination needs to be at the top of your bucket list.
Ucluelet (or Ukee, as locals call it) may be best known as a summer surfing destination, but it truly comes alive this time of year. We’re talking crisp ocean air, breathtaking seaside strolls, forests bursting with vibrant colours, and stunning sunsets.
With fewer crowds and a more laid-back pace, you’ll have more room to explore, and thanks to Ucluelet’s mild year-round climate, you can still enjoy many of your favourite summer activities.
Located on the far West Coast of Vancouver Island, Ucluelet is roughly a 13-hour drive and 2.5-hour ferry ride from Calgary, or a 16-hour drive from Edmonton. You can also catch a flight to Tofino Airport, which is less than a half-hour drive from Ucluelet.
Here are some of the top things to do during fall in Ucluelet.
Wild Pacific Trail: Ancient rainforests, dramatic cliffs, long beaches, and diverse ecosystems – a hike along this trail gives you a front-row seat to Vancouver Island’s natural beauty. It’s extra-special during fall, with the season’s colourful foliage and cooler temperatures adding an extra sprinkle of magic to the already breathtaking scenery.
Multi-Use Path to Tofino: Rent an e-bike from T̓iick̓in (Thunderbird) and ride the 25 km multi-use pathway through Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, taking you from Ucluelet to Tofino. Weaving through enchanting forests and passing by gorgeous beaches, this ride is all about soaking in those unbeatable views. Don’t forget to stop and snap some pics!
Storm watching: If you’re looking for a thrill, find a cozy spot at one of Ucluelet’s many oceanfront viewpoints and experience the jaw-dropping power of Pacific storms. The best time for this is late fall and winter. Trust us, it’s a local favourite for a reason!
The Break Cafe & Bistro: Nothing says good morning like a piping hot coffee and a tasty homemade pastry! Fuel up for a day of adventure or grab a midday snack in this much-loved cafe.
Ucluelet Brewing: This microbrewery is a must for any craft beer lover visiting Ucluelet. With live music, friendly locals, and tasty brews, it’s the perfect spot to unwind in the evening. Grab a pint, relax, and let the good times flow.
Shipwreck Pizza: Who doesn’t love a good pizza? With house-made sauce, fresh ingredients, and some pretty creative options (shoutout to the Davey Jones and the Titanic pizzas), this place serves up some of the best pies in town! They’ve also got vegan and gluten-free options, so there’s something for everyone.
Cedar House Gallery: Owned and operated by artist Tlehpik Hjalmer Wenstob and his family, this gallery showcases Nuu-chah-nulth art from the First Nations on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Spend an afternoon discovering a wide selection of carvings, masks, totem poles, jewelry, and limited edition prints, as well as paintings, giftware, and books.
Ucluelet Aquarium: Since you’re by the sea, why not get up close and personal with some fantastic underwater creatures? Ucluelet Aquarium is a little different than most – it’s Canada’s first catch-and-release aquarium, and it’s all about respecting the local ocean and environment. Most animals only spend around 9 months there before being released back to their home habitats. This means that displays are subject to change year-round, but some frequent creatures include sea urchins, rockfish, crabs, jellyfish, squat lobsters, grunt sculpins, octopuses, and more.
Foraged Secondhand & Vintage: Give your fall/winter wardrobe an upgrade! Shop a curated collection of handpicked vintage and secondhand pieces at this locally-owned store.
Redd Fish Supply Co: Want to support local and make a difference? Redd Fish is a local charity focused on ecosystem restoration, research, and education. At their store, you can find tons of unique gifts and souvenirs, and all proceeds go towards their awesome work.
Pina Styles: Here, you can get original artwork from local artists printed on a custom shirt. We’re talking some seriously one-of-a-kind pieces that truly stand out!
Drift Spa at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort: After a long day of exploring Ucluelet, why not pamper yourself? At Drift Spa, try a soothing facial, an invigorating foot scrub, or really relax and unwind with the popular Black Rock Massage.
Nurture Day Spa: Step into tranquility at this Aveda concept spa, which offers a range of signature treatments tailored to your specific needs using naturally-derived plant and flower essences. You can also try out private group sessions of Sivananda-style yoga to regenerate mind and body.
Thay Tea: Take a moment to yourself and warm up with a soothing tea at this cute and cozy spot. All of the teas here are ethically sourced and the flavours are endless, plus they have tons of health benefits.
