Face masks will now be mandatory in Calgary until late 2021

Well, friends, we hope that you’ve found a face covering that fits just right because Calgary’s mask bylaw has officially been extended until December of 2021.

Now, in an attempt to find a silver lining (for those of you who are upset right now) this decision is subject to change IF the city is able to curve our caseload. Mass immunizations are unlikely but possible and if we all stick to the guidelines things might improve!

“If we’re looking at people in Alberta being fully vaccinated by the fall, then obviously there will be no need for the bylaw at that time,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said during the meeting. A little positivity never hurt anybody, right?

In addition to lengthening the mask mandate, the council has also decided to increase the fine for those who don’t comply. These fines range from $100 for first-time offenders to $300 for third offences and will apply to everyone who refuses to wear a mask unless:

  • They have an underlying medical condition or disability inhibiting their ability to wear a mask
  • Are unable to place, use or remove a face covering safely without assistance
  • Are working out or eating
  • Are a caregiver accompanying a person with a disability
  • Or are under the age of 2 years old.

“At this point, everybody’s got a mask, everybody knows the rules,” Nenshi said, adding that, those who aren’t wearing a mask but are able, aren’t doing so “by mistake.”

As a reminder, businesses that fail to display signage or enforce the bylaw may be fined $200, but this has not changed since the bylaw was introduced back in August.

So, there you have it, folks. Calgary’s mask bylaw continues. We know that this sucks, but please remember to be patient, kind, and understanding. This is all being done for the greater good!
