Calgary’s Sikome Aquatic Facility, a go-to summer swimming spot in Fish Creek Provincial Park, is getting some major upgrades this year! Since the 1970s, the man-made lake welcomes over 100,000 visitors each year, who come for beach activities, swimming, and sunshine.

After decades without undergoing any major renovations, Alberta Parks is planning to modernize the space, making it safer and more accessible, and providing an overall upgraded experience for everyone.

What’s changing

Visitors can look forward to upgrades throughout the whole facility.

Two new universal bathrooms will be added to the beach and concession shop, and the staff services building will receive a full renovation.

The north change house will be enhanced with a new Water Safety Centre, while the south change house will receive updated washrooms.

Meanwhile, the south administration building will be converted into a beach house that will be available to guests to use for reservations.

Construction timeline

Construction at Sikome is set to take place from December 2025 through summer 2026. Luckily, most of the work is set to be done outside of the facility’s regular summer season, which allows visitors to still enjoy the beach and all its amenities.

Some areas may be closed for the 2026 season due to some minor updates. Visitors should follow signs and avoid any major construction zones. Parks staff emphasize that these inconveniences are necessary to maintain a safe environment for everyone.

Alternative options

While Sikome undergoes construction, visitors still have plenty of options for outdoor swimming within the city. While some neighbourhood lakes, like Mahogany Lake or Lake Bonavista, are reserved for local residents, others can enjoy swimming at safe spots along the Bow River, or at any of the outdoor pools and splash parks throughout the city.

Sikome is getting a serious glow-up, and we can’t wait to see it! Even with the construction underway, the beach will remain open, and you can enjoy swimming and sunshine all season. When the renovations are finished, Sikome will offer upgraded facilities and safer spaces, making it your next go-to summer spot.
