A stunning new immersive art experience lands in Toronto this week

The whole immersive art experience might be a little played out in Toronto, but we definitely think this is an exception to the rule. Edward Burtynsky, who is one of Canada’s preeminent photographers and artists, is putting on a new experience called “In the Wake of Progress“. Here’s what to know about it.

You actually might have seen Burtynsky’s work around town, as his images were prominently displayed in Yonge-Dundas Square to wrap up this year’s Luminato Festival. Turns out, that was more like a teaser for this new experience, which will be landing in the Canadian Opera Company Theatre.

Over 45 minutes, visitors will be immersed among 30-feet screens, experiencing images that are focused on “the story of humanity’s impact on the planet, the urgency of the climate crisis, and our quest for positive change.” It’s not exactly light fare, but boy oh boy, is it memorable.

After that, you can enjoy a more traditional exhibit experience, with some of Burtynsky’s best photographs (and even some new ones) on display. Alongside it is another high-tech option- two AR experiences “exploring the impacts and legacy of the internal combustion engine”.

Is it high level compared to other immersive art experiences in Toronto? Kind of. Do we definitely think any photography fan, or art lover in general, should check it out? Absolutely.
