Another month is upon us and with it? Several events that will celebrate and honour the legacy of some truly incredible Canadians. From concerts and dance showcases to festivals and panels, Black History Month kicks off in Calgary this February and so will a lineup of amazing things to see, do, learn and enjoy.

Here are just 10 that you can attend over the next few weeks.

Black History Month Movies and Short Films

Featuring full-length and short films, this particular event will take place on February 8th in That Empty Space at Mac Hall. Enjoy Selma, Summer of Soul and others from the National Film Board, in addition to snacks and activities.

Celebration of Black History Month “Rooted in Resilience, Rising in Unity”

A Black History tribute in the musical style of Mahalia Jackson

FREE Black History Month Movie: Remember The Titans at the Plaza

A powerful story of unity and perseverance, the Plaza Theatre in Calgary is proud to present a special screening of Remember The Titans for FREE in celebration of Black History Month.

This 45-minute documentary features the cross-cultural connections of 9 different dance genres. From Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Cuban to Hip Hop, Jazz, Step Dancing, Samba, Capoeira, Salsa, and Tap, take a beautiful journey that will showcase the cultural significance of each dance, linking back to African culture.

A Black History Month ‘Celebration of Excellence’ 

Shining a spotlight on Black women who have been ‘firsts’, ‘onlys’ and ‘trendsetters,’ Calgarians are encouraged to attend a Celebration of Excellence, an informative Black History Month event featuring liver performances, food and a raffle.

Trading Incognito: The Forgotten History of Black Fur Traders

This month, join renowned poet, writer and educator Bertrand Bickersteth at Heritage Park as he explores the surprising history of Black fur traders in Western Canada. Advanced registration is required!

The Second Annual Black History Month Dinner

Indulge in a three-course dinner and celebrate Black excellence with keynote speaker Lloyd Wilks. From contemporary storytelling from the Woezo Africa Company Dancers to a live saxophone performance by Slim Tyme this event is not one to be missed.

Black History Month Story Café: From the Black Immigrant’s Perspective

Showcasing musicians, spoken artists and poets this important evening will feature stories about Black History Month from the perspective of African immigrants. This particular event is pay-what-you-can but donations are appreciated.
