This charming Alberta village has a western boardwalk and a working steam train station

The Calgary Stampede is where visitors go to boot, scoot, and boogie, but few places in and around the area offer Western experiences all year round as authentically as Big Valley, Alta.

For those visiting the Prairies, there’s no shortage of beautiful sights and historic destinations, but located just northeast of Calgary, you’ll find a collection of funky shops, restaurants, and buildings from days gone by.

In 1910, Big Valley was home to only a few pioneer families, but by 1912, the village had a railway station and several nearby mines.

From a roundhouse to a church and a jail, many buildings were built to accommodate its residents — and many of them are still standing today!

Throwin’ it back in Big Valley

Love a good throwback? A tiny cell built in 1914 remains as a photo op, and a steam train still runs through the area, but one of the coolest things to see while there is The Jimmy Jock Boardwalk. 

Here, visitors can wander the U-shaped frontier town, complete with wooden signs and Western-inspired stores.

With a fudge factory, a bistro, an ice cream joint, a tea room, and a custom cowboy hat shop, guests will feel like they’ve been transported through time and space.

Still got time in your day-trip schedule? Check out the Canadian Railway Hall of Fame — a project meant to honour, educate and promote Canada’s heritage before climbing aboard their locomotive.

“Big Valley is the destination of Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions. Departing from Stettler, visitors board the train and have a scenic and relaxing trip down the line. Entertainment is often on board,” reads the Village’s site.

“Once the train rolls into Big Valley, passengers are greeted warmly by our hosts. There is never a shortage of residents or visitors on hand when the train pulls into town, over 70 times during the year.”

It may be small, but Big Valley, Alta., is a mighty adorable spot for a date, weekend outing or staycation.
