We’re so excited, and we just can’t hide it! After weeks of feeling like we live in the North Pole, Edmonton is finally getting a break for the downright frigid weather. Naturally, we’re going to try and make the most of it, and we feel like you should too.

Here are 10 of the best things to do in Edmonton this week.

DEEP FREEZE: A BYZANTINE WINTER FEST

Now celebrating its 15th year (!!) Deep Freeze festival is undoubtedly a must for anyone looking to make the most of the colder months. This celebration of local art, and the city itself, offers a ton of incredible art installations, learning opportunities, and more.

When: Starts Friday, January 14th
Where: Locations around Edmonton
Cost: Free!

OILERS VS. SENATORS

The Oilers have been in a little bit of a slump, so we’re hoping more fans at the home games might bring them out of it! They’re facing off against Brady Tkachuk and the Ottawa Senators this week, before taking over a week off before their next one.

When: Monday, January 10th
Where: 10220 104 Avenue NW
Cost: $28+

HOT BOY SUMMER: THE MUSICAL

Want to get a couple of laughs in this week? You might be interested in the extended run of this comedy musical put on by the Grindstone Theatre. Enjoy a satirical look at the past few months/years in the province, through the lens of a year-end university party.

When: Showtimes start Wednesday, January 12th
Where: 10045 156 Street NW
Cost: $40

CHINATOWN DINING WEEK

Maybe you want to celebrate the warmer weather with a nice meal. On that front, we’re recommending that you check out Chinatown Dining Week, which has 18 participating restaurants offering amazing options, all for $18 or less! Inexpensive and delicious, we like it.

When: Starts Thursday, January 13th
Where: Locations around Edmonton

ACC ICE WALL

Edmonton’s Ice Wall has returned for another season! This unique attraction is the perfect combination between the thrills of ice climbing without all the, you know, inherent danger of it. Whether you’re already into climbing or just wanna try something new, they’ve got options for everyone.

When: Open throughout the week
Where: 9613 96 Avenue NW
Cost: $19+

GO SKATING

One thing’s for sure- Edmonton’s skating rinks are going to be frozen solid for quite some time. Bring a Thermos of hot chocolate with you, go for a skate, and then really feel like you earned a night inside binge-watching movies or TV shows. That’s what we do, at least.

When: Open throughout the week
Where: All around Edmonton

OR CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

For an even more intense outdoor activity this week, you can always try your hand at cross-country skiing in some of Edmonton’s best parks! Our advice is to check in with your more outdoorsy friends or your parents and see if they’re willing to lend you some gear, too.

When: Open throughout the week
Where: All around Edmonton

TUBING AT EDMONTON SKI CLUB

To feel like a kid again, we’ve got tubing at the Edmonton Ski Club! The least expensive option in the city, this spot offers some classic, family-friendly fun and of course, more than earns the price of admission with a magic carpet to get you up the hill.

When: Open throughout the week
Where: 9613 96 Avenue NW
Cost: $15 for GA

ROYAL ALBERTA MUSEUM

On the flipside, one exhibition in particular at the RAM has caught our eyes in a big way. The Abandoned Alberta exhibition is a showcase of Alberta’s haunting abandoned buildings, which we must admit we think is super cool to look at.

When: Open Wednesday to Sunday
Where: 9810 103a Avenue NW
Cost: $21

HOP IN A GO KART

For those looking for an indoor thrill, you might want to check out Drive! at West Edmonton Mall. As North America’s only 3-level indoor track, this high octane (except electric, so maybe voltage?) option will have you begging for one more race time after time.

When: Open throughout the weekend
Where: 8882 170 Street NW
Cost: $29+

See what we mean? There’s a ton of stuff to look forward to in Edmonton this week, no matter what you’re in the mood for!
