Ready to step back in time to an era when people flocked to British Columbia for the mid-1800s gold rush? Located on the traditional territories of the Dakelh (Carrier) and Secwépemc (Shuswap) Peoples, Barkerville is the largest living history museum in western North America, allowing visitors to roam over 125 carefully restored heritage buildings. And the historic town is about to get an old-fashioned Christmas makeover!
On Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th, visitors of Barkerville can step back in time and enjoy a myriad of holiday activities, including carolling on main street, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and the telling of “A Sherlock Holmes Christmas Tale.”
Visitors can also check out tons of period displays, a decorated saloon, fresh baking at the Goldfield Bakery, and live programming throughout the old town.
This includes photos with Father Christmas himself!
Note that the holiday sleigh rides will be available from 10 am to 4 pm at Building #25, with the last ride at 3:30 pm.
And if you’re interested in turning your day trip into an overnight stay, you can stay at a restored cottage located within the heritage site, right in the centre of town (for a minimum of two nights).
The historic town will transform for the holidays for December 14th and 15th, with admission priced at $12 per person.
So there you have it, road trippers! If you’re up for a bit of a trek, it’s absolutely worth it to visit this old-timey Christmas village.
How to get there: Drive 8 hours and 50 minutes from Vancouver to Barkerville via BC-99 N and Cariboo Highway/BC-97 N.
