This B.C. park is known for its turquoise lake and for having prime wildlife viewing opportunities

If you’re looking for a stunning mountain lake to swim in as the weather heats up, you can’t do much better than Muncho Lake, which sits in the heart of the Northern Rockies. It’s not an easy road trip from Vancouver by a long shot, totalling just over 20 hours by car. But if you end up heading north for a wilderness adventure, it’s absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.

Revered for its turquoise waters and lakeside campsites, you’ll have no problem setting up your dream overnight stay here. The park is also known for having some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the province, which is sure to keep things interesting!

According to BC Parks, popular sightings include caribou, moose, mountain goats, and marmots, though park-goers should look out for Grizzly and black bears as well.

Make sure you review BC Parks’ wildlife viewing guidelines before making the trip.

The park’s unique natural landscape also affords it some truly spectacular wildflowers during the warmer months.

Muncho Lake itself has 12 breathtaking kilometres of jade-coloured water that is a dream to swim in.

Campers can head to Strawberry Flats or MacDonald Campgrounds 11 km further north, where they’ll find 10 reservable front-country sites and 30 vehicle-accessible sites.

And if glamping is more your style, consider checking out the cabins and huts at the Northern Rockies Lodge.

There’s a good chance you’ll spot some roaming Stone sheep on your way up the Alaska Highway to get to this stunning park.

It’s a trek and a half to get there, but well worth it!
