This BC park with glacier-fed lakes has vast sub-alpine meadows

Looking for a year-round provincial park to venture to? The lesser-known Babine Mountains Park is a bit of a trek from Vancouver, but it’s no less enjoyable and wondrous than popular destinations in the Lower Mainland like Chilliwack Lake Park and Cultus Lake.

Situated in the scenic Skeena mountains, the park offers visitors vast sub-alpine meadows to discover on foot, bike, or horseback.

Hiking

Hikers can traverse through maintained trails that pass by glacier-fed lakes and meandering rivers, including the Cronin Creek and Silver King Basin Trails, which merge with a historic mining road.

On the latter, you’ll be led to the Joe L’Orsa Cabin, a cozy log cabin that sleeps 15 to 20 people, according to BC Parks.

Note that the cabin is available on a first-come-first-served basis.

The historic mining road takes hikers through beautiful meadows and coniferous forests to the Silver King Trailhead, where even more adventure awaits.

Winter recreation

During ski season, the park transforms into a wintery wonderland, with plenty of snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling opportunities to go around. This includes exploring the SIlver King Basin, Lyon Creek Trail, Harvey Mountain Trail, Ganokawa Basin Area, and Harvey Mountain Viewpoint.

How to get there: Access to the west end of the park is off Old Babine Lake Road, which leaves Highway 16 just east of the Bulkley River bridge.
