This Alberta hike goes through an enchanting valley of golden larch trees

Looking for an unforgettable adventure? Hiking can be done no matter the season but in Alberta, there are few trails as breathtaking as Larch Valley in Banff National Park.

While you only have until October (weather permitting) to enjoy this hike, this should not be missed by those in search of scenic views.

Larch Valley Trail

A magical path surrounded by colourful larch trees, the trailhead for this particular hike is found at Moraine Lake.

From beautiful turquoise water to sweeping views of fall foliage, there’s truly no place quite like it, but you’ll want to pack light and wear comfortable shoes.

According to Banff and Lake Louise Tourism, the 4.3 km (one-way) trek will take anywhere between three and six hours to complete depending on your speed—but it’s worth the sweat.

“At certain elevations of the Rockies, the renowned larch tree grows in verdant patches. Those willing to hike up above Moraine Lake into Larch Valley will find an entire sweeping forest of them,” they explain.

“The feeling of topping out after a rolling trail and attaining the treeline above the larches will fill you with pride. Sit beneath their soft branches to bask in the view and swap smiles with backpackers headed deep into Paradise Valley and climbers descending from the summit of Mount Temple.”

Interested in visiting?

Personal vehicles are not permitted at Moraine Lake, so you’ll first have to reserve a seat on the Parks Canada shuttle or book a spot on the Roam Transit bus.

Once there, look to your right for a sign marking the trail for Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass.

This trail can be pretty busy, so plan ahead and enjoy your way up.

There’s plenty to see and much fun to be had—but it’s a long one, so don’t forget snacks and water.

It won’t be long until it’s unsafe to visit, so check it out while you can.

You won’t regret it!
