Time to get in those fall hikes while the weather still allows it! The A.Y. Jackson Lookout offers some of the most gorgeous views in Sudbury. The trail leads hikers through quiet forests, along a bridge and among debris from a meteorite believed to have been formed 1.85 BILLION years ago! Plus, you’ll be rewarded with the sights of Onaping High Falls at the end.
Let’s plan your visit!
The A.Y. Jackson Lookout is located on Highway 144 about 35 km northwest of downtown Greater Sudbury.
If you’re driving to the lookout from Toronto it will take you around four and a half hours.
Once you arrive, there is free parking is available at the welcome centre.
After parking at the visitors centre, you can begin your adventure exploring A.Y. Jackson Lookout.
There’s a stunning 1 km riverside trail leading to a bridge right off the start. The trail spans the top of the falls and be sure to follow the marked trail beyond the bridge if you want to check out the forested area (which is especially stunning this time of year). This will take you around another 2 km loop.
The short trail will also take hikers to the platform that displays a view of the Onaping River as it tumbles over the cascades of High Falls.
One of the coolest parts of A.Y. Jackson Lookout is the remnants that still remain from a meteorite that scientists believe struck 1.85 billion years ago.
Along the trail, you’ll see a large sample of rock labelled “Onaping Formation”. This formation contains fragments of broken rock that were blasted out when the meteorite struck all those years ago.
Talk about a perfect outdoor autumn adventure!
