These 12-metre tall sand dunes are in Alberta & here’s where you’ll find them

Looking for a diverse landscape? Look no further than your own backyard!

From mountains and the badlands to boreal forests and big cities, Alberta has so much to see, but few sights are as impressive as the Athabasca Dunes Ecological Reserve in Maybelle River Wildland Provincial Park

Located approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes from Fort McMurray, these active dunes are considered the largest in Alberta and should be visited by adventure-seekers far and wide.

Surrounded by lush trees and water, the sandy area is 8 km long, 1.5 km wide, has 12-metre tall dunes and features kames that are 60-metre-high, which are among the largest in the world – according to Travel Alberta.

“Shifting up to 1.5 metres a year, these powerful dunes are slowly migrating south, burying jack pine forests and filling in small lakes, leaving behind a flat, barren plain,” they explain on their website.

“Birdwatchers take note, Arctic terns, not known to nest elsewhere in Alberta, can be seen nesting in the reserve.”
