Alberta is home to 12-metre-tall sand dunes and here’s where you’ll find them

From lakes and rivers to hole-in-the-wall restaurants, Alberta is full of surprises, but few are as jarring as the Athabasca Dunes Ecological Reserve.

The Athabasca sand dunes

Located in the Maybelle River Wildland Park, approximately two hours and 45 minutes from Fort McMurray, this unique destination is part of the largest active sand dune system in the province and is a must-visit on your next northern vacation.

Despite being surrounded by lush trees and water, these dunes are dry, hot, large, and in charge.

At 8 km from north to south and 1.5 km wide, this breathtaking spot is wildly impressive, and features 12-metre-tall sand dunes, as well as 60-metre-high kames, which are among the largest in the world.

“Your first glimpse of the Athabasca Dunes might cause you to rub your eyes—not because there’s sand in them, but rather in sheer disbelief,” writes Travel Alberta on its website.

“It’s hard to believe this landscape, which is more suited to the Sahara Desert, is found in the northwest corner of Alberta.”

As if the dunes were not cool enough, the park also serves as an incredible opportunity for birdwatchers. From Arctic terns to loons and nighthawks, there’s really no place like it.

“Accessing Athabasca Dunes by road is extremely difficult,” explains Parks Alberta, adding that overnight camping and open fires are prohibited in the reserve.

“The winter road from Fort McMurray to Fort Chipewyan provides some access. Public access within the Ecological Reserve is restricted to foot travel. Motorized vehicles and boats are not permitted.”

Still, from flora and fauna to wildlife, it’s an incredible sight if you’re willing to make the trip. Just stay safe and be smart.
