This boardwalk trail in Ontario winds through an over 10,000-year-old bog

Alfred Bog is the largest of its kind in southern Ontario and it’s home to a plethora of wild animals and plants. There’s even a trail you can explore that will take you along for a fun-filled outdoor adventure this fall season.

I’ll take you about a five-hour drive east from Toronto, towards Ottawa to get to the Alfred Bog. From Ottawa, it’s about an hour’s drive.

Years and YEARS in the making

According to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, bogs take thousands of years to develop. As for Alfred Bog, per South Nation Conservation, it has been “building for 10,000 years.”

The bog is home to a number of wildlife including moose, waterfowl, turtles and orchids.

“It is classified by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry as a provincially significant wetland and an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest,” shares the NCC.

How to enjoy it

To best way to explore the bog safely is through its 273-metre boardwalk without “harming its sensitive ecosystem,” according to the SNC.

“The dominant vegetation is peat moss, and this produces a unique community of plants and animals,” the site adds.

The Bog Walk, as it is named, is rated as moderate difficulty and is the perfect trail for a nice scenic walk – you can even bring your pup along with you too.
