Fortress Mountain ski hill in Alberta is a resort of mystery and intrigue to those who have never been, but it might not be long until guests are able to hit the hills by the dozens again!
Known by many for appearing in movies such as The Revenant, The Bourne Legacy, and most notably, Inception, the Kananaskis Ski Resort actually shut down in 2004 due to falling revenue.
Since then, it’s become somewhat of a ‘ghost town,’ with it only opening for a short time back in 2006 before parts of the resort were deemed unsafe less than a year later.
While an affiliate cat skiing company called Kpow does supervise smaller groups to ski Fortress Mountain from time to time, the larger resort has been under constant reconsideration with the hopes that one day, it’ll see a modern crowd of people.

Now, truth be told, there have been several reports over the years that Fortress would reopen prior to the 2020’s – but many are hopeful that this time, the lofty plans come to fruition.
In a recent interview with CTV News Calgary, the president of Fortress Mountain Holdings, Chris Chevalier, said that they had their approvals in place for the first phase of a project that would see the resort reopen in December of 2023.
From new water and sewer facilities to lifts and a new day lodge, completing “phase one” won’t be easy, but Chevalier and his team believe that it’s possible.
If there’s one thing that’s for sure, it’s that Albertans love to ski – and Fortress Mountain? It has the potential to be something amazing. Don’t believe us?
Fortress was featured in a beautiful documentary called Ghost Ski Resorts, which delves into the past, present, and future of the lodge, and to say that it’s an incredible hill is an understatement. Heck, it was good enough for Christopher Nolan.
As always, we’ll keep an eye on this one – so stay tuned. 2023 could be the year that they breathe life back into the legendary hill and we will be watching!
