A rich history and unbelievable sights! Alberta is a wonderful province and it’s places like Áísínai’pi or Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park that help make it so special.
A beautiful destination protected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Writing-on-Stone is highly regarded for its unique rock formations and sweeping views.
Located south of Calgary, those who visit can go swimming, camping, hiking and take walking tours where they’ll learn about the cultural significance of the area.
You see, not only is it prepossessing with plenty to do, but it’s famously home to a collection of important pictographs detailing the day-to-day activities, battles and the journey of those here long before us.
“The sacred landscape and the rock art of Writing-on-Stone / Áísínai’pi provide except\onal testimony to the living cultural traditions of the Blackfoot people,” UNESCO explains.
“According to Blackfoot beliefs, spiritual powers inhabit the earth, and the characteristics of the landscape and the rock art in the property reflect tangible, profound and permanent links with this tradition. The viewsheds of the sacred valley, with high grassland prairies, also contribute to its sacred character and influence traditional cultural practices.”
Featuring carvings that date back over 3,000 years, this particular park continues to be a popular place for traditional ceremonies, vision quests and prayer, so while it’s worth a walk-through, it’s important to be respectful.
