It’s happening, Alberta. Just over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic rocked businesses, shook up families and changed the way people socialize and work, Premier Jason Kenney announced that in two week’s time, we will officially move to the final stage of Alberta’s ‘Open for Summer’ strategy, putting (what we can only hope will be) our worst days behind us.
“This is a great day for Alberta! Thanks to the diligence of Albertans and the decision of 2.7 million folks to get vaccinated, we are now just two weeks away from getting our lives back to normal.” Kenney said during the conference.
“This is an important milestone and a great achievement, but we will not stop here. We will keep administering first and second doses as quickly as possible so we’re not just open for summer, but open for good.”
Effective Thursday, July 1st, all remaining restrictions will be lifted including the ban on indoor social gatherings. In addition to this, the general indoor provincial mask mandate will also be lifted; though It is important to note that masking may still be required in limited and specific settings, such as larger, concerts or markets.
If at any point prior to the 1st you do contract the virus, you will still be required to isolate for 14 days as per Alberta Health Guidelines, but it seems as though (according to the government) we’re out of the woods.
This is a big day, Alberta. We’ve gone through a lot, but we made it.
Please remember to continue to be kind, to get your second dose of the COVID vaccine, to be safe, to follow the guidelines as they are currently in place, and to wash your freaking hands!
We can’t wait to see all of your beautiful faces and we wish you all good luck in the Open for Summer Lottery – which you will still be able to enter until 11:59 pm on June 24th.
Winners will be announced on the 1st – so cross your fingers, your toes, your legs, and your eyes.
3 of you will walk out of this a millionaire.
