As the province continues to expand so does its long list of area codes. Luckily, for those who don’t like change, there is a bright side! Alberta will be getting another new area code in the spring of 2022, and although we may no longer be able to recognize when we’re getting a local call right away, at least millennials and boomers will have one more thing to bond over – or just complain about – that being, “remember when it was just 403 and 780?”

According to the Telecommunications alliance, 368 will be Alberta’s fifth area code, will be gradually introduced beginning on April 23rd next year, and will only be given in the event that they run out of all others to give.

Other numbers already in circulation (in addition to 403 and 780) are 587 and 825, which were introduced in 2008 and 2016.

“The introduction of the new area code 368 is the result of a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and is intended to meet the continuously growing demand for new telephone numbers,” the Telecommunications Alliance wrote in a press release.

As always, existing phone numbers will not be affected – so don’t worry at all about trying to contact anyone or vice versa but get ready folks! A new area code era is upon us.
