This Alberta Day celebration in Edmonton is bringing horse-drawn carriages and a drone show

Alberta Day is a celebration of everything that makes the province special, and Edmonton is holding a huge event to honour it. The Legislature Grounds will be taken over by concerts, food trucks, and a bunch of activities to explore for one day only. Here’s what to know.

This Sunday, Edmonton will host a celebration of festivities in the name of Alberta Day. Whether you’re grabbing a beer from the distillery zone or taking your kids to the epic petting zoo, there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy.

What to know before going to Edmonton’s Alberta Day event

What is Alberta Day?

According to the Government of Alberta, the Alberta Act came into effect on Sept. 1, 1905, and formally established the province of Alberta. To mark the anniversary of this historic event, Sept. 1 has been declared Alberta Day, which acts as a celebration of its story.

When and where is this Alberta Day event?

The Alberta Day event will be taking place on Sunday, Aug. 30, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

It’s going to be taking place at the Alberta Legislature Grounds, located in downtown Edmonton along the river valley.

What’s the best way to get there?

According to the Legislature, the best way to access the grounds is by public transportation.

The closest transit stops are Government Centre, located on the east side of the Queen Elizabeth II Building, and the Metro and Capital LRT lines meet at Government Centre station, which is connected underground to the Legislature pedway. There’s also Corona Station, which can be found nearby on 107th Street and Jasper Avenue.

Is parking available?

For those interested in driving, the Alberta Legislature building does not have a public parking lot.

This means the only visitor parking available nearby is limited to roadside parking, paid parking along 99th Avenue, or free two-hour parking along 107th Street (between 98th and 99th avenues, east of the Government Centre Transit Centre).

Headliner Jake Mathews, Canadian country star, will be taking the stage from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. to finish off the event.

• Indigenous Experiences from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• BBQ will open at 11:30 a.m.
• Horse-drawn carriages available from Noon to 6 p.m.
• Lord Strathcona’s House from Noon to 5 p.m.

When is the drone show?

The drone show will take place on the south lawn at 9 p.m.

How much is admission?

This event will have free admission to all.
