An “excellent” ski season: BC’s winter weather forecast is out & here’s what to expect

The season of pumpkin spice and comfy sweaters is in full swing, but it won’t be long before winter sets in. Thankfully, AccuWeather just dropped its official winter weather forecast for Canada, and it looks like BC is in for a pretty average season! Let’s get into it.

Winter officially starts on Wednesday, December 21st, bringing with it a mix of snow and rain for us west coasters.

AccuWeather stated that much of our winter weather pattern will depend on the orientation of La Niña, as it has in the past. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), La Niña is “still in charge in the tropical Pacific,” and there’s a 75% chance that the phenomenon will be in effect this winter.

According to Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson, “the latest information suggests that the steering winds will be coming from a west-northwest and northwest direction this winter,” which means we’re in for a winter with “near-normal temperatures, snow, and rain” – in central and southern BC, at least.

Northern BC can expect to see the heaviest snowfall, compared to normal. The forecast predicts that snow will fall across the northern part of the province as well as the southeast through the Canadian Rockies. So if you’re into winter sports, it looks like you’re in for an “excellent” ski season.

Of course, when La Niña is present, even the slightest shift in wind direction can impact the intensity of the forecasted weather patterns. So take all this with a grain of salt, and let’s hope for an easy-going winter in BC.
