When that quarantine loneliness hits you hard, find an unconventional pen pal to keep you company. A viral TikTok video is circulating about a website that’ll let you write to Canadian inmates. Yep, just a few clicks online and you’ll be introduced to a whole host of prisoners to befriend. Now, before you go falling in love with a Canadian inmate, let’s break the system down for you.

First, a quick disclaimer. You’ll find on the homepage of the site that you must be 18 years or older to use it. So if you’re a teen or younger, steer clear. Also, maybe don’t provide your real address if you actually do end up writing in. That one seems obvious, but it’s worth stating.

Okay, now that that’s out of the way, here’s what you can expect when you head online. The website is full of profiles of Canadian inmates. You can peruse a database with their photos, names, and charges. Please note – the site recommends doing your own Google search before contacting anyone because privacy laws prevent them from confirming the charges listed.

Each inmate has a little blurb introducing themselves. Some even have recorded audio clips so you can hear your potential new friend’s voice. And obviously, a few of the inmates let you know whether they’re looking for friendship or something a little more, well, lovey-dovey.

According to the site, the letters that are written are a way to connect inmates with the outside world. It’s a pro-social method to help them reintegrate into society. Apparently, increased communication can actually decrease the inmate’s chance of becoming institutionalized and reduces the rate of recidivism. Huh, the more you know.

You can check out the website for yourself right here.
