It’s no secret that in the past few years Seattle has seen an insane amount of development. From office spaces to new homes to condos, the city has seen it all. But things are about to get even more interesting because Seattle will soon have the world’s most sustainable apartment building.

Sustainable Living Innovations broke ground on the 303 Battery building this past Thursday. The new multifamily tower will be the first of its kind in the world to meet net-zero energy requirements dictated by the International Living Futures Institute. When it’s completed it will be 15 stories and have 112 apartments. Best of all, 27 of those will be affordable housing and use 100% electricity.

Perhaps the coolest thing about this building is actually the way it’s being constructed. The new tower is being built in panels at SLI’s factory in Tacoma. That means when it’s ready to go up, 900 panels will be placed in sequence to create this feat of sustainability. And when everything is up and running, the building should use half of the energy that a similarly-sized building would use.

When completed, apartments will also have smart home features that control things like locks, blinds, thermostats, and more. We’re excited to see companies in Seattle committed to building greener buildings and we’re curious to see how they’ll age.
