It only took a few days after NHL players became eligible to play once more before Team Canada made their first picks about who’s on the team. And, none other than the Oilers superstar Connor McDavid was among the lucky (and deserving) few to make Team Canada for the upcoming Winter Olympics! Here’s what to know about it.

McDavid joins Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Alex Pietrangelo (Las Vegas Golden Knights) as the first 3 picks for Team Canada, ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics taking place this February. Not only is this the first time NHL players will be in the Olympics since 2014, but it will also be McDavid’s first-ever time on the team!

Team Canada has dominated on the Olympic stage throughout the 21st century. They’ve won gold in 3 of the 4 instances where NHL players can join, barring a disappointing 7th place finish at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin. And while other countries continue to grow their hockey programs, Canada remains the name to beat on the international stage.

Will that trend continue this winter? We sure hope so, and we know that McDavid will be bringing his all to the competition. We can’t wait to follow along!
