It may be called Lonesome Big Trail but we promise it isn’t as sad as it sounds. Lonesome Bog sweeps around Sausage Lake (haha) and travels through a variety of habitats such as boreal forests and ancient glacial landscapes.

The trail is within Esker Lakes Provincial Park, about six hours by car from Toronto in Kirkland Lake.

According to Ontario Parks, “This picturesque trail encircles Sausage Lake, including the bog at the east end, via a boardwalk that takes you right across the wetland.”

The trail is nice and short and is marked as easy spanning 1.5 km which should only take around an hour to complete.

Be sure to bring a camera, the hike will pass through a Jack Pine forest, a Black Spruce bog, an open wetland and a pretty shore.

If 1.5 km of trail isn’t enough for, the park has a couple of other options.

The Prospector’s Trail is another short forested hike that is nestled along the southeast shore of Panagapka Lake. Similar in length and difficulty this is the perfect addition to your hike!

To get to the trail you’ll need to enter through the Ontario park and pay the day fee which starts at $12.25.
