Big changes are coming to one of the busiest transit stations in North America. Bloor-Yonge subway station is getting a major expansion to improve service and combat overcrowding.
According to the TTC, over 220,000 passengers travel through Bloor-Yonge station daily, making it one of the busiest in Canada and the US.
With the construction of new transit lines in Toronto and the GTA, the TTC expects ridership to increase significantly, and the subway system must be ready to meet that demand.

All three levels of government have announced joint funding of up to $1.5 billion for the expansion and rehabilitation of the subway station.
With the funding, the City of Toronto plans to make big changes that will keep commuters moving faster during rush hour.
Some of the expansion plans include a second platform on Line 2 for eastbound service and an expansion of Line 1 northbound and southbound platforms.
The station will also get new elevators, escalators, stairs, and a new accessible entrance and exit on Bloor Street East.
“These improvements will enable more Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) residents to use public transit to get to and from their destination, reduce gridlock on our roads, and help the TTC accommodate a projected growth in ridership,” says a press release from Infrastructure Canada.
This project is part of Ontario’s plan to invest $61.6 billion into public transit over the next 10 years.
That includes the construction of Toronto’s new 15-stop subway line, the Ontario Line, which will run for over 15 kilometres from the Exhibition Place area, through the city, and up to the Science Centre.
The province recently released rendering images of the new subway trains on the Ontario Line, which will be equipped with the latest technology.
During rush hour, the province says that trains will arrive every 90 seconds to keep things moving as quickly as possible.
It’s inevitable that our city will only get busier in the years to come, and it looks like we’ll be able to rely on efficient transit to keep us moving.
