Under the weight of inflation, many of us could use a couple of extra bucks right now. Luckily the Government of Canada is releasing its second installment of the climate action incentive payment (CAIP) in Ontario this week, a program aimed to offset the cost of federal pollution pricing.
Now, it’s important to note that not everyone will be eligible come October 15th when cheques are distributed.
In order to have received your first payment back in July and again this coming week, you must have been a resident of Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba or Saskatchewan on the first day of the payment month and the last day of the previous payment month.

You’ll also need to meet at least one of the following criteria:
- You are at least 19 years of age
- You have (or previously had) a spouse or common-law partner
- You are (or previously have been) a parent and live (or previously lived) with your child
An application wasn’t necessary to receive these payments, so for those of you who qualify – just sit back, relax and enjoy!
For the 2021 base year, Ontario provides $373 for an individual, $186 for a spouse or common-law partner, $93 per child under 19, and $186 for the first child in a single-parent family. There’s also a supplement for residents of rural and small communities, and the amounts are listed here.
The payment you receive is universal and therefore not subject to cuts based on your household’s net income.
If you’re entitled to receive the CAIP, you can expect to receive them on the 15th of every April, July, October, and January.
