You can explore an abandoned army base at this Washington State Park

Alright, adventurers, if you’re in need of something a little different, then a trip to Whidbey Island is in order. Once there, you can explore an abandoned army base at Fort Casey Historical State Park. You can run through old bunkers, batteries, tunnels, and more! It’s unlike anything else in the state and visiting this park is sure to give you an unforgettable experience.

Now before we get any flack, we use the term ‘abandoned’ lightly. Because the forts here are actually maintained by the park, however, they are no longer in use by the military. In fact, they’ve been empty since the 1940s and actually date all the way back to the 1800s. So a visit to Fort Casey will definitely take you back in time.

Don’t worry, the forts are perfectly safe and while they may feel like a maze, you probably won’t get lost. But if you’re afraid of the dark, you’ll definitely want to bring a flashlight. That being said the only thing you’re likely to encounter in the tunnels is other curious explorers. And if running in the dark isn’t really your thing you can check out the rest of the 999-acre marine camping park. You can catch amazing views of Puget Sound or bring a kite and fly it in one of the large fields.

Plus you can also check out the early 1900s lighthouse and interpretive center if you’re in the mood to learn. Because trust us, there’s a lot more to this park than meets the eye.

It’s hard to put into words just how cool this local historic site is and trust us, it never really gets old. So whether you’ve been before or this is your first time hearing about Fort Casey, it’s time to take a trip. Now keep in mind that park closures may happen so be sure to read the park website before leaving. And of course, bring a mask and hand sanitizer with you. With all that out of the way, get out there and enjoy this piece of Washington history.
