You can buy a vacation home for less than $2 in this charming town near Rome

Ever dreamed of owning your own slice of paradise in the Italian countryside? Well, you can go ahead and pinch yourself because this opportunity is 100% real. The town of Maenza is located in the Province of Latina about 70 km southeast of Rome and in an effort to infuse it with some “fresh oxygen,” the town’s mayor says that many homes are going up for sale for just €1, equivalent to about $1.18 in U.S. dollars.

Around 100 rustic stone homes will be going up for sale and Mayor Claudio Sperduti told CNN Travel that as the homes are turned over to the town from their previous owners, they will be posted on the town’s website to make the process as transparent as possible.

The town itself is considered a desirable place to live or vacation in, and features charming 13th-century architecture, beautiful trails, views of the sea, and close proximity to the big city and seaside resorts, according to Travel + Leisure. According to CNN, wild horses are known to roam this region, which is also rich in fascinating history for you to discover.

However, he told the outlet that if interested buyers have any requests about the available homes, they can get in touch with the town hall directly for help from local officials.

As with anything that seems too good to be true, there’s a small catch. The homes aren’t move-in ready and will need some renovations to make them safe and comfortable. Buyers who snap up these homes will be required to do these renovations within 3 years max, and put down a deposit of €5,000, which will be returned once the job’s done, reports CNN.

However, the homes are small, so you won’t have to shell out too much to make it a perfectly suitable place to call home on your trips abroad. Sperduti said that those who are ready to settle down and start their renovations the fastest will be given priority if there are multiple people interested.
