This Alberta wolfdog sanctuary offers one howl of an experience

Canada is full of surprises, scenic views and magical experiences – but few compare to the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary in Alberta.

Located just east of Cochrane, this enchanting destination provides educational programs on responsible wolfdog ownership and the importance of preserving wild wolves in their natural environment.

Not only will guests learn all there is to learn about these majestic animals, but they’ll also be able to get up close and personal with their canines.

“In June 2011, the Sanctuary was created to drive public awareness and education surrounding wolfdogs and wolves in the wild,” they explain on their website.

“We welcome visitors to come and experience our wolfdogs in person to learn about their unique nature, how we can reduce backyard breeding of these animals and the connected importance of wolf conservation.”

Interested in checking it out? Yamnuska offers 3 different tours, the Wolfdog Intro Tour, the Wolfdog Sanctuary Walk and the Wolfdog Interactive Tour in which you’ll get to meet several different packs of wolfdogs.

It is important to note, however, that this is a sanctuary, not a zoo. From smells, sounds and objects, wolfdogs can be incredibly sensitive and there is a dress code in effect. In addition, guests will be asked to keep their voices down, ask that children not run around and everyone stay out of restricted areas.

If of course, you can’t make the trip but want and are able to contribute to the organization, you can also donate to the facility.

Either way, this truly is one of the most incredible places in the province, deserving of your attention.

It’s unreal.
