The world’s shortest covered bridge is in this Ontario town

This may be the shortest walk you ever take. Latchford is a small town in Timiskaming District in Northeastern Ontario, home to a landmark with a global title – the world’s shortest covered bridge!

The bridge is 11 feet, three inches (3.4 meters) long along the roof ridge and the water covering is four feet of that across a concrete culvert.

The bridge currently holds the world record for the shortest covered bridge. The bridge can hold one passing vehicle or one lane of people walking. You may want to add some other things to your itinerary while in Latchford as you’ll be over the bridge pretty quickly.

Latchford has a beautiful waterfront with a boardwalk and a beach area spanning Bay Lake.

The town is great for those who love spending time outdoors, showcasing multiple trails ranging in distance and sights.

The town website lists the details of the trails to help you better pick which ones to explore!

The area has slices of history that go back to the early 1900s, too.

According to the town of Latchford, the area has “a history that not only incorporates our lumbering past but that of being a major transportation centre as well as a supply point for water access mining sites.”

“Elk Lake received its supplies on large river boats from the “Port of Latchford” until 1912 and the famous inventor Thomas Edison had a mine across the lake from town.”
