Wordle has taken Canada and the world by storm, but for what? Well, as it turns out, all of our efforts have manifested into a title – 17th best in the globe, according to a new study.

No, we’re not number one (that ranking belongs to Sweden), but we are better than the United States and we’d be lying if we said that didn’t put a skip into our step.

According to Word Tips, who conducted their study in January of 2022, the great north has an average guess rate of 3.90 tries, surpassing our neighbours to the south by .2  but how in the heck did they figure all of this out?

“We pulled 195,248 tweets with hashtag #wordle using Twitter API,” they explained.

“We successfully extracted the game score from 142,669 tweets. To qualify, we were looking for the score presented as a fraction (e.g., 3/6 or 5/6) and the grid of coloured squares.”

“We dropped the rare cases where fraction and image contradicted each other. We dropped 2,729 tweets with a score of X/6, which meant that the puzzle was not solved with six guesses and kept only numeric scores.”

Interesting, no?

Of course, they didn’t just stop at country averages! They were also able to determine the success rate within each city.

With their methodology in mind, it turns out that here in Canada, Toronto rules the word-guessing game with an average of 3.81, with Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal and Edmonton rounding out the top 5 best in the country.

While we’ve still got a long way to go to crush Sweden’s average of 3.72, we can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride.

After all, playing the dang game has become a very important part of our daily routine – so keep at it, folks.

Maybe one day Canada can claim that Wordle championship belt.
