To be honest guys, we have mixed feelings about winter. The parts we love include the infectious holiday spirit, the opportunity to overindulge (’cause baggy clothes) and the chance to cosy up on the couch in front of the fire with hot chocolate. The parts we kind of dread are the 7-8 extra minutes we need to gear up every time before stepping out, the shorter days and longer nights, the inertia and the lack of socialising. While there’s little we can do about the former two, thankfully, we do have a solution for the latter two- The Calgary Sport and Social Club. And their winter registrations are now open. YAY indeed!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’d need no intro to this adults-only, co-ed sports club that has been in the city for over 25 years. You’d think that the CSSC’s popularity would be owing to the fact that it suffices two quintessential human needs of staying active & healthy and socializing. Well, it is only partly true.

The primary reason that the CSSC is a city favourite (and ours too) is that it made sports doable for everyone- pros, amateurs, solo players, friends (the list goes on). Basically, it’s the sporting equivalent of build-your-own sundae and like the latter, you love every bit of it.

To give you an idea of the level of customization, here’s how it works- you can choose whatever sport you like from the 10 different indoor sports, pick your skill level from rookie to expert and everything in between and decide if you want to join by yourself and make friends/teams as you go or enter a league or tournament with your gang. Whatever your sporting need or preference, CSSC has got you covered.

The long list of indoor sports includes Volleyball, Ball Hockey, Basketball, and Soccer among others. You can check out the full list here.

This was only the “Sport” side of the club. They also live up to their “Social” side. The club has partnered with several bars across the city with crazy ass deals to make sure your social game is just as on point as your actual game. And we don’t mean some random one-off bar. They’ve teamed with some of the city and area’s very best like Last Best Brewing, The Canadian Brewhouse, Banff Ave Brewing Co, Campio Brewing Co, and Jasper Brewing Co.

Clearly, the Calgary Sport and Social Club is one of the best things that happened to league sports in the city. So do yourself a favour and take advantage of their winter registrations which end on Dec 15 as the Leagues begin mid-January. Oh, and keep your proof of vaccination handy as you will need that to participate in all leagues and tournaments.
