Thousands of dazzling lights will illuminate Alberta’s enchanting Japanese garden this winter

Wild Rose Country may not be a winter wonderland just yet, but it won’t be long until the ground is covered in snow. When it is, make memories that’ll warm your heart at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge, Alberta.

A tranquil destination beloved by locals and visitors alike, Nikka Yuko was originally built as a way to thank the Japanese community for contributing so much to the area.

Nikka Yuko’s Rich History

A celebration of unity, the garden was established in 1967 and got its name from the Japanese words Ni from Nihon (meaning Japan), ka from Kanada or Canada, and Yuko, which means “friendship.”

“Nikka Yuko expresses the merging of Japanese and Canadian cultures in a garden rich in symbolism. It captures the signature of the southern Alberta landscape while simultaneously integrating traditional Japanese philosophy and symbols,” they explain on their website.

“Each element of the Garden has been carefully chosen and maintained to bind the entire Garden together in perfect harmony.”

In the summertime, visitors can wander through the grounds and see these all-important elements which include a waterfall, stream, reflective pond, a meadow, meticulously pruned trees and shrubs, spring flowers, stone lanterns, and a teahouse—but it’s a little different in the winter!

Winter Light Festival

When the flower beds have been frozen over, they make way for an enchanting experience that brings the garden back to life.

Described as helping the public “create those cherished winter memories,” the Winter Light Festival features thousands of twinkling LEDs, colourful displays, and warm drinks.

It all kicks off on November 29th, 2024, with this year’s theme—The Four Seasons: Haru (Spring), Natsu (Summer), Aki (Fall), and Fuyu (Winter).
