Canada’s largest free outdoor light festival is in Ontario and it includes fireworks

We’re well into November which means it’s time to get into the holiday spirit! Canada’s largest free outdoor light festival happens right here in Ontario, a spectacle of millions of lights and life-sized displays across the Niagara Falls area. The Winter Festival of Lights also features 21 nights of fireworks shows and a hot chocolate trail – need we say more?

The festival

The 2024 Winter Festival of Lights kicks off on November 16th, 2024 and will run until January 5th, 2025.

Over three million lights will make up displays all around Niagara Falls, Ontario, meaning no matter where you are in the area, you’re in for a beautiful view.

What goes best with checking out winter lights displays? Hot chocolate, of course.

The Hot Chocolate Trail is a self-guided trail leading visitors to “delicious stops of chocolatey concoctions created by chocolatiers, chefs and mixologists”.

If you want to try something a little different, the stops will include everything from classic cups of hot cocoa to creations with mint, orange and s’mores.

The trail has 25 stops to choose from.

In December, Santa will make an appearance at the Festival on select nights for photos at the Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse.

Those who visit will get a complimentary digital photo with Santa! Ole’ St. Nick will be there from December 6th-7th, 13th-14th and 20th-21st.

Fireworks shows

The Winter Festival of Lights fireworks series begins on the first night of the festival, Saturday, November 16th and will run every Friday and Saturday evening at 8:00 PM.

Between December 27th and the finale on Sunday, January 5th, 2025 there will be a show each night also at 8:00 PM. If you’re in the area for New Year’s Eve you can catch a special fireworks show on December 31st at 12:00 AM to ring in the new year!

According to Niagara Falls tourism, the best places to see the fireworks shows include the Skylon Tower and Niagara SkyWheel or indoors at any of the hotels and restaurants along the water.

Whether you’re visiting with friends, family or with a special someone for a romantic date night, The Winter Festival of Lights is the ultimate stop this holiday season!
