Natural rock pools carved during the last ice age await explorers in this coastal BC town

Ready to venture to where the rainforest meets the sea? It’s time to add the small town of Sooke, British Columbia to your road trip map!

The highlight of this coastal town is a series of deep, naturally polished rock pools and potholes at Sooke Potholes Provincial Park – not to be confused with Sooke Potholes Regional Park.

According to BC Parks, the natural rock pools were carved out by ancient glaciers during the last ice age some 15,000 years ago, leaving behind mesmerizing, crystal-clear waters.

Outdoor recreation

Situated 45 minutes away by car from our province’s capital, the vibrant district of Sooke is home to a plethora of outdoor recreation opportunities, including fishing, surfing, kayaking, hiking, biking, and whale-watching.

During the warmer months, visitors can take in the town’s panoramic views of the ocean and mountains by ziplining over the majestic forest via Adrena Line Zipline Adventure.

During the colder months, visitors can book a getaway at one of Sooke’s many scenic, oceanfront cottages!

Looking to fuel your visit with a pint or two? Head to the historic 17 Mile Pub, a landmark pub with tons of charm and supernatural mysteries to uncover, specializing in authentic Irish Coffee and Guinness pours.

So there you have it, road trippers. If you’re looking for a less busy alternative to Victoria this fall or winter, you’ll find the perfect destination in Sooke!

Sooke

How to get there: Take a ferry from Vancouver to Swartz Bay, Victoria, and drive 38 minutes via Trans-Canada Highway/BC-1 N and Juan De Fuca Highway/Sooke Rd/BC-14 W.
