Ontario’s famous groundhog just made his weather prediction

It’s Groundhog Day, and the famous weather-predicting groundhog of Ontario, Wiarton Willie, has spoken. According to Willie, it will be an early spring this year!

Apparently, Willie did not see his shadow this morning, and that means we will have an early spring. Atta boy, Willie!

Every year on February 2nd, the town of Wiarton, Ontario hosts an entire festival dedicated to this annual tradition starring Willie.

A video of the groundhog’s predictions shows the crowd erupting in cheers as the news broke.

After the results of neighbouring groundhogs came out this morning, we were not feeling too hopeful about an early spring.

Nova Scotia’s beloved groundhog Shubencadie Sam saw her shadow earlier this morning.

Just across the border, Philadelphia’s Punxsutawney Phil also saw his shadow on Thursday morning.

However, we are choosing to put our faith on ole’ Wiarton Willie and looking forward to an early start to the new season.

Legend has it that the future of our winter is in the hands of the groundhog and whether or not it sees its own shadow.

The tradition of Groundhog Day started way back in the late 1800s.

It is based on the Pennsylvanian Dutch superstition that if a groundhog sees its shadow on February 2nd due to clear weather, winter will continue for six more weeks.

If the woodchuck doesn’t see its shadow, spring will come early.

With the extreme cold weather we’re experiencing in Ontario this week, at least we now have something to look forward to.
