What to know about the Alberta vaccine passport system going into effect today

Well folks, after weeks of anticipation (both in horror and enthusiasm), Alberta’s COVID vaccine passport system is now officially in motion. This new mandate was announced last week in hopes of slowing the spread of the virus, ultimately relieving hospitals across the province.

This program will allow businesses to operate without the catalogue of newly implemented health measures as long as they request proof of vaccination or a negative test result from all customers before entering the venue.

Now, although this will not mandatory, it’s fair to assume that most places, from concert halls, restaurants, to casinos and fitness facilities, will choose to go ahead with the system in hopes of keeping their business afloat.

Other busy spaces, like libraries and retails stores will not be among those able to participate, after being taken off the eligibility list over the weekend – so if you have yet to download and print your POV card don’t fret about having to make any errands after work. Retail spaces will still be open, but only at 1/3 fire capacity and shoppers can only be with members of their own household or with two close contacts if they live by themselves.

For those of you who have dinner plans, though – getting access to your card is incredibly easy if you haven’t already done so.

All you have to do is head to the Government’s website here, enter your Alberta Health Care number, birthdate, and the month you received your last vaccine and press confirm.

After downloading your record, just make sure that you have it on you at all times either on paper or on your phone, to avoid being denied entry into your favourite eateries or gyms.
