This Alberta park is the perfect place to spot wildlife this winter

Newsflash: You don’t have to visit the zoo to get a glimpse of Canadian wildlife. Not when national parks like Wateron are practically in our backyard.

Located in Wild Rose Country’s deep south, Waterton Lakes National Park is known for its vibrant town and gorgeous waterfalls. It’s also a great place to spot wildlife against the snowy landscape during winter months.

Where the wild things are

Bighorn sheep and deer are a common sight in Watertown throughout winter. Watch for elk from your vehicle at the Blakiston fan, or venture into the paths throughout the park.

Although the prospect of seeing wildlife in an Alberta park is exciting, it’s also important to take precautions and behave responsibly – for both the animals’ sake and yours.

Wildlife who get too used to humans are more likely to die unnatural deaths, which is why you shouldn’t get too close. Deer can also be surprisingly aggressive when threatened, despite their cute appearance.

Be sure to carry bear spray when you’re on any trails, even during hibernation season. Make lots of noise so that animals know you’re coming. If a carnivorous creature, like a wolf or coyote, approaches you, act aggressively to prove you’re not prey. And finally, don’t feed animals! Not only will it kill them, but it’s prohibited by law and can lead to a fine of up to $25,000.

More winter fun

There are other ways to enjoy the great outdoors of Waterton beyond animal spotting. You can rent snowshoes from the Visitor Centre, and trek popular areas like Cameron Lake, Red Rock Parkway, and Wishbone Trail.

If you have your own set of cross-country skis, check out the number of groomed trails throughout the park. Just make sure you’re avalanche aware, as Waterton Lakes National Park is avalanche terrain.

Dress warm, be safe, and have some fun in wonderful Waterton!
