The massive Waterfront Seattle project is taking shape & here’s what’s new this year

It doesn’t get much more classically Seattle than the waterfront. Between the ferry dock, Ivars, and all of the piers, it’s one of Seattle’s most unique neighborhoods. Especially because the vast majority of it is being reimagined as part of a development that’s more than 10 years in the making. Let’s get into some updates.

If you frequent downtown Seattle then you’re probably well aware of the Waterfront Seattle project. But if this is all news to you, the massive project is set to completely reimagine the area with a new park promenade, reconstructed piers, and even a new surface street. What’s made it all possible is the removal of the viaduct which once dominated the area.

The park has a completion goal of 2024 which despite the pandemic and concrete strike is still on track according to Waterfront Seattle. While we can’t wait for the full park to be finished, here are the projects on the docket for 2022:

• Construction of Overlook Walk, a new elevated pedestrian connection between Pike Place Market and the waterfront, is anticipated to begin in spring 2022.
• Construction of Pier 58 rebuild, currently known as Waterfront Park, which will be redesigned to create a larger public space and improve access, safety and flexibility to the pier, is anticipated to begin in fall 2022.
• Alaskan and Elliott ways roadway and bridge expected to be complete and open to vehicle traffic by the end of 2022.
• Construction of a new Union Street Pedestrian Bridge is anticipated to be completed in late 2022.

At this time, the construction of the Union Street Bridge is underway meaning that the project is getting back to regularly scheduled programming! And while we all wait for its completion you can visit waterfront highlights like Pier 62, Habitat Beach, and a few already installed pieces of public art.
