Flooding and snow expected in Washington state this weekend after an unusually warm fall

Fall who? This year’s weather has been confusing to say the least after a fall with record breaking temperatures. Now it feels pretty safe to say that it looks like fall is actually here. Especially because an atmospheric river is headed for Washington this weekend and here’s what that means.

An atmospheric river is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, a river in the sky. These rivers carry vapor in a rough “equivalent to the average flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River” according to NOAA. When these atmospheric rivers make landfall, they often release the water vapor in the form of rain or snow which is exactly what’s coming for Washington state.

Starting today, Thursday, November 3rd, Seattleites can expect an 80% chance of rain with that chance increasing to 100% on Friday. Temperatures will fluctuate from the low 40’s to high 50’s throughout the weekend. Be sure to be aware of wind gusts which are expected throughout the weekend.

Luckily Seattle, is not expected to get hit quite as hard as the rest of Washington state. That being said, heavy rainfall and strong winds across the state could bring flooding, snow to the mountains and even power outages.

So dig out your rain jacket, boots and umbrella and get ready for the real start to fall.
